Symphony I in C Minor, Op. 13 (Sheet) (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

These Kalmus edition scores are excellent inexpensive scores, which contain revised (later) versions of Widor's symphonies. The size of the printed content is very good, the page layout in most of them is such that it's convenient to turn the pages without the need of an assistant, and the binding is so that they don't threaten to close at the rack. Highly recommended!

Music for Little Mozarts: Music Discovery Book 1 Review

I'm a music teacher with over 12 years experience teaching young children.I useThe Music For Little Mozart's Series for my youngest students first.To ensure that you have adequate coverage of all the materials presented, make sure you get most of the books in the series.The Lesson Book is a great start, but this is the next most important book.It has Great songs to sing and play along with.Don't worry if you don't sing, your child will, with encouragement, and the help of the CD that comes as a two CD set (the other CD goes with the Lesson Book).These are very important for teaching steady beat and the joy and fun of music, and can "bring them back" to the keyboard when interest wanes.No kid can resist the racing car song with the Glissando's where they run their fingers over the keys after the song says, "Ready, set, go!"

The next most important book is the workbook that gives the student the chance to show off their new skills and has some great listening exercises you can do with them.It is not the coloring book, which is really just a coloring book. Lastly, I recommend also the Recital book.It tells you at the top of the page which page in the Lesson book it corresponds with (they all do), and it gives the student one more song to practice their skills with.

I recommend sitting down with the student for no more than 1/2 hour breaking it up into 5 min. each of review of previous topics, lesson book, recital book, workbook and Music Discovery Book with CD.You can play the CD with the lesson book to review the material on a later date and the CD of the Music Discovery Book at any time while they are playing with their toys or doing "homework" in their workbook.

I like Book 2 set as well, and you can continue through 3&4 or move to Alfred's other Piano books 1A-6 .

Mendelssohn Songs Without Words (Complete) and Six Children's Pieces, Op. 72 [Paperback] Review

Mendelssohn has always been one of my most intriguing composers. I've always thought his stuff was at least as good, if not better than, Mozart's. They're two easy composers to compare, because after all, Mendelssohn and Mozart share more similarities than just German-sounding names that start with M. Both of them grew up as child prodigies and many music scholars would argue that each reached his musical maturity by age 20 or so (although I would disagree in Mendelssohn's case). Both lived short, but very productive lives (Mozart died at 35, Mendelssohn, 38). Neither necessarily changed the musical scene of their time, but both influenced later composers.

Personally, I've always favored Mendelssohn, and his "Songs Without Words" are a great example of his middle period (to use Beethoven terminology) style in the forms of small piano pieces. They range in difficulty from rather easy to miniature virtuosity show-offers. They offer a great display of his, shall we say 'Mozartian', melodic ideas. They really are fantastic little pieces to listen to and play.

As far as this version goes, I cannot compare it to the Schirmer edition but I can say that it suits my needs. The editor has included fingerings, the notes are printed large enough that you won't need your reading glasses and after a little wear the book will sit open on your piano (usually this becomes the main issue for pianists). All in all, the book is worth your money, and Mendelssohn is definitely worth your time.
