The Mikado in Full Score [Paperback] Review

Any lover of this Gilbert & Sullivan masterpiece will gain a fuller appreciation of it by being able to follow the lyrics and dialog while listening to the operetta. The score also has a nicely written preface and synopsis of the story. Although knowing how to read music is not essential to the enjoyment of this Mikado full score, buyers that do read music will gain an even greater appreciation of it by being able to follow each instrumental line along with the lyrics of the songs. The Dover score is beautifully printed at a very bargain price to boot. Everyone can derive a great deal of pleasure from this score, no matter what level of musical training they possess. Highly Recommended! (P.S. I understand that the full score of The Pirates of Penzance is due for release this fall)

The Second Book of Soprano Solos (Vocal Collection) [Paperback] Review

I bought this book with the set of accompaniment cds at a local music store. I used it mainly for my own pleasure, to primarily, "exercise" a classically trained voice that doesn't get much use.Lately I've been using it to practice for auditions for choirs, community operas, etc. Not playing the piano, and not having ready use of someone who does, the discs come quite in handy as it allows me to hear and practice with the actual accompaniment that will be played when I go for the audition.Note: this is accompaniment only. There is no melody line to these recordings, unless they just happen to be part of the original accompaniment. There are no vocal demonstrations either. You will still need to be able to learn the melody on your own. Of course, melody and words are included in the music book. Songs include those in English, German, French, and Italian.
This particular book contains the following:

Product Description:
The witty and rollicking tale of a young man apprenticed to a band of pirates too kindhearted for their own good, The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty remains one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most beloved and frequently revived works. This newly engraved performing edition is based on Sullivan's autograph, contemporary copyists' scores, and both the first and second editions of the vocal score. It corrects numerous errors that have crept in over the years and is the first edition to offer performers the choice of using either the 1880 or 1908 versions of the Act II finale. Aficionados will be particularly delighted with the first accurate full score of the "Climbing over Rocky Mountain" section, which incorporates music from the legendary lost Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Thespis. Introduction by the editors. Instrumentation.

The Mikado: or The Town of Titipu Vocal Score [Paperback] Review

As a performer, the most important asset of a score is legibility and freedom from errors. This PV is superb in that it is very legible and corrects errors from prior PV's.It is also inexpensive enough that a performer need not fear guilty about writing in the margins or breaking the binding. While not a critical edition, it has everything that a performer would want in a PV, and I would unhesitatingly recommend it over ANY other PV presently on the market, even those which have been "authenticated".

Operatic Anthology - Volume 1: Soprano and Piano (Vocal Collection) [Paperback] Review

This is an excellent addition to any young soprano's or music teacher's library, and includes a variety selections from various operas. Unfortunately, you can buy most any other soprano anthology and get the same selection. I have found several editorial mistakes in this edition, as well as the fact it is not nearly as legible or informative as it could be.
