The fumes were probably from a solvent used in the manufacture of the resin coating the rubber. Many such solvents have been banned for use in the United States but there are no controls over how imported products are manufactured.
I like China, but, yes, the first piano was manufactured there from a firm that has since disappeared. It would not be surprising if they used a cheap but dangerous form of solvent.I have not yet opened the box of the second one, since I want to caputre a sample of the fumes. But the lesson here for other purchasers is to thoroughly air the piano outdoors until any chemical smell is gone. The product shouldn't be dangerous after that. There's no lead issue.
