Hymns with a Velvet Touch (Sacred Performer Collections) [Paperback] Review

I can't believe I'm the first person on Amazon to review this gem!As a church organist for decades, I purchase piano arrangements infrequently and mainly for my own pleasure at home.This is probably the most delightful volume I've found in years.The lilting, flowing, velvety arrangements of long-loved hymn tunes are wonderful for private worshipful moments.In a number of significant ways, this book is unusual.The difficulty level is great enough to produce glorious sound, but not so hard as to cause frustration for someone without extensive hours available for practice.As an added bonus, I have been able to adapt this music quite easily for organ at church and have received numerous good comments on the result.Adapting "velvety" piano music for organ use is not always easy, especially when there are extensive runs, but this music is truly unique and anyone with good pedal technique could manage it easily.I just love these arrangements and am sure other church pianists or organists will too.

Everlasting Praise (Alfred's Sacred Performer) [Paperback] Review

I have not played classical music in many years, but I have really enjoyed the blend of these well known classical pieces used in conjunction with hymns.

I have this book as well as all of the "Tapestry" books.All are excellent.All are very difficult, but worth the effort. Gorgeous stuff.I wish he'd publish more piano works.

Awesome Praise (Sacred Performer Collections) [Paperback] Review

This is a wonderful book!I purchased this book because I needed some of the newer praise songs for solo piano to use in church services.The songs are fun to play and fairly easy to work up for the experienced piano player.I would recommend this book.

Hymns Re-Harmonized - Keepsake Edition: Piano Solo (Sacred Folio) [Spiral-bound] Review

This book includes 110 traditional hymns. It is a combination of her three other volumes, plus a few extra hymns. On the left-hand page she gives the traditional score for each hymn, and on the right-hand page she gives her own "re-harmonization." Generally she uses minor and dissident chords to make each hymn sound unique. Some arrangements are better than others, but overall, I mostly use it to get ideas. I would never use her "rendition" for congregational singing, but it is fine for a prelude, postlude, offertory, or maybe for a special number.

I gave it three stars, but mostly that is because it isn't exactly my style. The re-harmonizations are more along the lines of modern music, while I prefer the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic Eras. I personally think money is better spent with one of Classical Hymns or Hymns with a Classical Touch for postludes and preludes.

A Nice addition to the book is the different resources in the back including modulations for most common keys.

Chris Rice - The Living Room Sessions (Piano Solo Personality) [Paperback] Review

I love all the music in this book.I find that others love this music too.All the hymns can take you back to a certain place in time.I owned one copy of this book - and took it to a camp and left it out for others to play.For the three weeks I was there, you could hear person after person sit down to play out of this book.The book is now trashed and falling apart.

Bought another copy of this book - and play it in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.Older people stand outside in the halls and are moved to tears over this music.My second copy is starting to fall apart.

I've gone and bought 2 more copies.This book is one I never want to be without.
