I have a 6 year old who has been taking violin lessons for 1.5 years and has now switched to cello. This method is simply amazing. Dont forget to get the accompanying CD. That teaches as well as they listen to it. I myself am not teaching my daughter, but a certified teacher is.

We first tried to have our kids learn the Suzuki books without the CD.Big mistake.Listening is so much a part of the method.We saw marked improvement once we added the CD to practice time.Would recommend.

Suzuki Piano School, Vol. 1 [Paperback] Review

I quit Suzuki piano as a child (didn't like my teacher, didn't like learning notes), but recently took it back up again.I now understand the value of Suzuki--and wish my first teacher had embodied what the method is all about.I am currently teaching myself, but see how the use of both hands and chord usage in progressing songs is very valuable in the learning process.What they teachyou in the building/base songs transfer easily to more complex songs and classic pieces--and the pieces are all very nice--I recommend ordering the CD/tape to learn, as learning by ear is just as valuable as learning to read at this stage--I think they go hand in hand--and memorizing the song from the CD then being able to translate it onto the piano is very rewarding.I'm now on the second book...looking forward to the third!I was able to easily branch out to other piano books based on my foundation knowledge from the Suzuki method.That said, I did supplement it with some theory (as I don't have a teacher, and these books rely on a teacher for that aspect).I recommend Humphries book for theory--with internet reading as a supplement!Hanon exercises are very helpful, too.

Studying Suzuki Piano: More Than Music : A Handbook for Teachers, Parents, and Students (Suzuki Piano Reference) [Paperback] Review

After looking into the closest Suzuki school for my 5-year old autistic daughter, the 45 minute drive and $3000 annual tuition was just not possible.My daughter(as well as her sisters) have shown a lot of interest in our piano in the dining room, and were already trying to "play by ear" songs like "Twinkle" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb".I minored in music in college(though I still can't play with two hands), but I figured I knew enough to start my kids out with this method.This book is a great value, and it's easy to get started.I especially liked that it stressed hand position and technique.The best thing is I can teach my daughter when SHE takes in interest in learning and stop when she loses interest, rather than force her to sit for a 30-minute lesson.(And isnt' that something that Suzuki believed in ?)Who knows, when the time comes, maybe we'll both learn how to play with two hands!
