Supertramp - Greatest Hits (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

This band is seriously underrated and often overlooked. I can't think of a better candidate for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or for a VH1 Behind the Music (we've seen the Journey story like a thousand times already). Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies are outstanding song writers. These transcriptions are basic and may not be completely accurate in certain cases but this book is still great and these songs are so much fun to play- especially if you happen to have a Wurli or a keyboard with a good Wurli sound...and of course a 12 string guitar. It pretty much focuses on the band during their classic lineup (the only lineup that matters)- Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, Dougie Thompson, John Helliwell and Bob Seibenberg. The only exception is the song Cannonball. Other than the song "I'm Beggin' You" I don't think any fans will miss any of the less inspirational material released since Roger left. Maybe one day the stars will again align just so and the original band will come together again- at least to accept a long overdue entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... but until then these songs are a tremendous inspiration for musicians around the world and I highly reccomend this book.

John Mayer Room For Squares (PVG) (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

i just recently purchased this book for something to do to kill time. i'm a big fan of john mayer's music, and wanted to see if i could possibly play some of his stuff. at first it was a little intimidating, because some of the chords are a little difficult for me. (i think john must have some rather large hands.) but contrary to what has been said about this book by others, once you take the time to learn the music, it sounds exactly like the album. minus the background instruments of course. so if you base your decision on whether or not to buy this based on will the songs sound like the album, don't let that be a reason. just pay attention to the fact that you will need a capo, and will need to know what a "drop D" tuning is to make it "sound like the album". other than that, if you enjoy playing guitar, and you enjoy john mayer's music, then you should like this book. if you don't enjoy one of the aforementioned, then you probably won't enjoy this book. it's a pretty simple concept.

Enya - The Memory of Trees (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

If you like Enya's music, and even if you don't, this book offers some great songs to play on the piano. They are very pretty, and fun to play. Lyrics are included, making singing along relatively easy for anyone who likes to.

The Memory of Trees (no lyrics) is kind of repatitive, and the right hand plays in constant 8ths, but it's lovely and a good exercise.
China Roses (lyrics) is very pretty, but a little difficult to play.
Hope Has a Place and From Where I Am I've played before, but right now they escape my memory (they probably have 5 sharps)....
La Sonadora (Spanish? lyrics) is kind of pretty.
On My Way Home (lyrics) is impossible to play up to speed (unless you have an extra hand) but it's good otherwise.
Once You Had Gold is a very pretty song. I think this is one with 4 or 5 sharps, but once you get over that it's fun to play.
Pax Deorum (Latin? lyrics) I've never played the whole thing, because it is boring to play, even though it sounds nice.
Teahouse Moon (no lyrics) is lots of fun; it is also kind of repatitive, but in a great way that makes it easy to play with the dynamics.
Athair Ar Neahm (Gaelic lyrics) is beautiful, lots of fun to play, and another one where playing with the dynamics is great.
Anywhere Is (lyrics) is kind of difficult, but fun once you can play it.

These aren't difficult songs, despite those with many sharps, but not for beginners. Level 4 and up, maybe?

You probably won't like all the songs in this piano book, but the ones you do like you'll play a lot.

Also recommended are Enya's other piano books (Shepherd Moons & Watermark especially). If you like this you'll like those, and visa versa.

Enya - Paint the Sky with Stars (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

Although Enya's music is superb, the transcriptions in this book leave something to be desired.Part of the trouble is of course due to the difficulty of arranging music originally for multiple instruments and voices for solo piano, but on other instances it seems to be more thoughtlessness on the parts of those who transcribed the music. For example:

-Several of the pieces, such that "Anywhere is" and "The Memory of Trees" are very repetitive.In the original pieces, the harmonies and background change over the course of the song.In these arrangements, each verse is notated exactly the same.

-In "The Celts", a D.S. al. Coda is given without any indication as to what point in the music the player is supposed to skip to the Coda

-In "Storms in Africa", there are sections where the pianist is asked to play three notes simultaneously, each of which is at least an octave and a fifth apart from the others.

Casting Crowns (Easy Piano) [Paperback] Review

Prior to buying this book, I had earlier bought a piano score of "Who Am I" from praise-charts, and it was excellent. But the arrangements in this book don't sound like the stuff I heard on the CD, and the score keeps following the melody like a hymn with the chords beneath. Certainly not what I expected. I might as well just play the chords; only the intros sound true to type.

I enjoyed the CD, and a little over a year ago I started learning to play the piano as an adult.I was a little apprehensive that this book would be over my head, but my piano teacher has already incorporated some of these songs into my "curriculum".The arrangements are a bit challenging for someone at my level of skill, but what saves me is that the tempo of these enchanting songs are slow enough that I can keep up.I am quite happy with this book.

Back to Titanic (Songbook - Piano) [Paperback] Review

This sheet music collection is of course from James Cameron's "Titanic."Specifically, these songs are found on the second music CD that was released from that movie, "Back toTitanic."
I bought this book because from that second CD there wasone particularly good piano solo, "The Portrait."However, I didnot find it as enjoyable to play as I thought I would.In the othersongbook from "Titanic" that was released is a piece entitled"Rose."That is very similar to "The Portrait" exceptthat "Rose" is a lot more powerful and compelling."ThePortrait" requires a softer touch that what I prefer in pianomusic.
The other pieces were not as enjoyable as the first"Titanic" songbook (which, by the way, is the best book ofsoundtrack music, and it can easily be found by searching for its ISBN:0793592240).A lot of the pieces in this second book are based on songsrather than the score.

I recommend the other "Titanic"songbook first, and then this only to those who really like the music fromthe movie.

The Michel Legrand Songbook [Paperback] Review

I have always enjoy listening to Michel Legrand's work. And of course, just like everyone else, I do have a few favorites. Honestly, I bought the book because of one particular song - The Windmills of Your Mind. The arrangement of the song is not what I expected and used to. There are several questionable chord progressions. However, there are a handful of very well arranged songs. Overall, I am please with the purchase.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

I'm a big Coldplay fan and was excited when I got this book. I quickly sat down and learned "The Scientist," one of my favorite tracks from the album. The book was very helpful in picking apart not only the melody and guitar chords, but also Chris Martin's piano parts.
However, whenever I've seen clips of Coldplay playing "The Scientist," there seems to be a different left hand part played than what is actually written in the book. Oh well, just a little work to do. Good Stuff though.

The music in Shepherd Moons is easier to play than Memory of Trees. An advanced player could easily sightread the music; therefore, it is not a challenging book. However, the music is gorgeous and fun to play. I've been playing it every day since I bought the book last week.
