Secret Garden [Paperback] Review

Secret Garden [Paperback]This has been one of my favorite musicals since when I first sw it in1991. It tells the classic story of the beloved novel by the same name. Themusic is lovely and the whole thing has a mysterious air to it, somethingnever really done in a Secret Garden movie or musical before. I like it.All the lyrics are wonderful and the songs have a wonderful tune too. It isneat to be able to read all the lyrics and all the spoken words. Theoriginal cast recording of this musical has some of the spoken words, butnot near all of them. It is a nice way to re-live the experience. I highlyreccomend this book. If you like this book, you may also like the originalnovel "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett and theoriginal cast recording of the musical itself.

The Complete Cabaret Collection - Author's Edition (Easy Piano Vocal Selections) [Paperback] Review

The Complete Cabaret Collection - Author's Edition [Paperback]As you might guess - for the title above - I'm a huge, I mean, HUGE, 'Cabaret' fan and collector. So, of course, I found this book delightful, but - taking the risk of making a fool out of myself - I must warn to anyone who doesn't know it that these are the scores of the songs. I boughtit thinking that it was something else - I don't know exactly what -, and Idon't regret it, but it's not what I expected it to be... Thanks God I havea pianist friend so he can play it for me :-)Anyway, it's a must-have forevery 'Cabaret-collector' out there.

In the Heights-Piano/Vocal Selections (Songbook) [Paperback] Review

In the Heights-Piano/Vocal Selections [Paperback]A surprising number of songs are included here. The piano/vocal arrangements are fantastic, and very little is cut from the original show - even choral parts are kept the same, mostly. The only major exception is a slightly abridged version of the title song (not surprising though, given its length and dialogue segments). Many times the vocal selections score of a musical can be over-simplified or watered down, but it's clear that a lot of time and effort was spent putting together these arrangements to make them as authentic and true to the show as possible. Miranda's score is one of the best I have ever heard, and these arrangements have only increased my appreciation for it. A must-have for any ITH fan!

Avenue Q - The Musical (Piano/Vocal arrangement) [Paperback] Review

Avenue Q - The Musical [Paperback]This score, from "Avenue Q", a show described as a combination of "South Park" and Sesame Street", is truly excellent. Be warned--the performers on the CD and in the show may make it seem simple, but some of the songs are hard to play. Believe it or not.

This reduction for voice/piano/guitar is pretty good---it would have been better if they had used an arrangement for vocal line with piano accompaniment. Incorparating the vocal line into the accompaniment works for some of the songs, but the quality of most of the songs is hurt by it. Nonetheless, this score is very playable (although sometimes hard to play) and contains many great songs for recreational use or performances and auditions.

This book contains every song from the show and not one note has been cut (although not all dialouge said in the songs is included). The certain gem of the score is "There's a fine, fine line" the "folk rock" ballad that ends the first act. Simple and melodic, it certainly steals the show. "If you were gay," "Purpose," the "Manilowesque---"Fantasies Come True," and "The More you Ruv someone" are all uniquely composed with a different style in mind. Also very melodic and enjoyable. The upbeat and very similar "It Sucks to Be Me," "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," and "For Now" are also delightful highlights.

Hilarious, witty songs are contained in this collection. You would be wise to purchase the CD for inspiration on how to perform these songs, if you haven't already. You definately should also see the musical anytime you're in New York for a fun-filled evening or afternoon.
