Ragtime, Vocal Selections [Paperback] Review

Ragtime, Vocal Selections [Paperback]I had an urge to play some Ragtime tunes on my piano, so I bought thisbook and began to play.It has the vocal selections along with the sheetmusic.I find that the sheet music consists of many many chords, making itmore difficult, but it's still great fun to play and sing!Great forauditions!
Ragtime has awesome music, and though not all of the bestsongs are in this, most of them are.My favorite song from Ragtime isWheels of a Dream, and I was SO happy to see it in here.
One thing Ienjoyed about the Ragtime music book was that it wasn't chopped up.When Isay that, I mean from experience with other piano books. Many books withchop up the song like from movies for instance. The songs are translatedand arranged horribly, but I loved that since a lot of the music from themusical was in piano solo, the music plays EXACTLY the same as you would'veheard on Broadway!
Overall, each song is wonderful and this music is anabsolute delight to play!Enjoy!

Parade: Piano/Vocal Selections [Paperback] Review

Parade: Piano/Vocal Selections [Paperback]Parade is one of the most auspicious debuts by a theatre composer in recent memory.Jason Robert Brown, then in his mid-20s, joined legendary 20-time Tony-winning producer-director Harold Prince and Tony-, Pulitzer- and Oscar-winning playwright Alfred Uhry for a musical about a Jewish man living in Atlanta in 1915 who was wrongly convicted of the murder of a young girl. The result was a critical success and one of the finest theatre scores I've ever heard.I anxiously awaited the release of this score so that I could play the songs and sing the moving melodies at home. The only problem is that Brown is such a talented "rock pianist" (think Jerry Lee Lewis meets Sondheim)that his piano parts are almost unplayable by amateurs such as myself. My advice: buy this book, and get someone very talented to play it for you.

This edition features a detailed plot synopsis, a note from the composer, a biography of Brown, and 12 piano/vocal selections edited by the composer: Big News * Do It Alone * Come Up to My Office * It's Hard to Speak My Heart * My Child Will Forgive Me * Pretty Music * That's What He Said * What Am I Waiting For? * You Don't Know This Man * more.

In the Heights-Piano/Vocal Selections (Songbook) [Paperback] Review

In the Heights-Piano/Vocal Selections [Paperback]A surprising number of songs are included here. The piano/vocal arrangements are fantastic, and very little is cut from the original show - even choral parts are kept the same, mostly. The only major exception is a slightly abridged version of the title song (not surprising though, given its length and dialogue segments). Many times the vocal selections score of a musical can be over-simplified or watered down, but it's clear that a lot of time and effort was spent putting together these arrangements to make them as authentic and true to the show as possible. Miranda's score is one of the best I have ever heard, and these arrangements have only increased my appreciation for it. A must-have for any ITH fan!

La Cage Aux Folles ~ Vocal Selections (Piano/Words/Guitar Chords) [Paperback] Review

La Cage Aux Folles ~ Vocal Selections [Paperback]A typical Hal Leonard publication, this contains Patrick Holland's (?) arrangements of all of the most important songs of the Broadway musical La Cage Aux Folles (not the Robin Williams film or the French original). From the songs on the original Broadway cast recording, only "Cocktail Counterpoint" is missing. Composer/lyricist Jerry Herman is perhaps more well-known, at least to older audiences, as the composer of Mame; these songs are rather in that same vein.
The keys of the pieces here are not always identical to those of the musical--the opening number "We Are What We Are", for example, begins in B major in the musical but is given in C major here. Surely the transposition is for ease of performance, but anyone looking to this to learn the show should be forewarned. The arrangements are not overly simplified and are a good representation for piano of the orchestral score. Chord symbols and guitar tablature are also included.
Songs included are "We Are What We Are", "A Little More Mascara", "With You On My Arm", "Song On The Sand", "La Cage Aux Folles", "I Am What I Am", "Masculinity", "Look Over There", and "The Best of Times".
About the songs themselves; the showstopper "I Am What I Am" has become a gay anthem of affirmation and is a gorgeous song with an important message regardless of one's sexual orientation. "La Cage Aux Folles", "Masculinity", and "We Are What We Are" are quite witty. "A Little More Mascara" is by turns poignant and funny. "Look Over There" and "Song on the Sand" are unconventional love songs, sentimental in a unique way. "The Best of Times" calls us to live and love for today, in a way reminiscent of Candide. Only "With You On My Arm" is a disappointment, and that only because it is rather average, with no particular appeal or sparkle, not because it is actively bad.
Along with the songs one gets a reproduction of the musical's poster on the cover and 13 full or half page black and white photographs of good quality, but not well labeled. Like the original cast CD's photos, if you don't already know which one is George Hearn and which one is Gene Barry, you won't find out here! The most remarkable of the photos is a rehearsal picture showing one of the male dancers in dress and heels (no wig) doing a 180 degree split kick in the standing position--one leg on the floor and the other fully extended over his head. How such a thing is possible without major structural damage I'm not sure, but I'm certainly in awe.
