Claude Debussy Piano Works [Paperback] Review

Claude Debussy Piano Works [Paperback]I really like this piece. With the accompanying CD I can actually play the pieces the way they should be played. Some pieces are hard to play, though, but practice makes perfect, everytime.....

The Best of Ludovico Einaudi: Piano Solo [Paperback] Review

The Best of Ludovico Einaudi: Piano Solo [Paperback]Ludovico Einaudi is not (yet) well known in the United States, but he ought to be. He is my favorite composer, whose work falls in that nebulous genre variously called "neoclassical" or "new age."The music has a minimalistic flair (cf. Philip Glass), although Einaudi's work is much more melodic than Glass's.If you are not familiar with Einaudi's music, order his "Echoes" (greatest hits) CD as an excellent introduction. The sheet music to most, if not all, of the pieces on Echoes is included in this collection, as well as many other pieces.

One of the strengths of this book is that Einaudi himself clearly played a heavy role in writing or editing these transcriptions. They are true, note-for-note renditions of the pieces. They are also heavily annotated in terms of dynamics.

Another very appealing aspect of the book is that Einaudi's music varies quite a bit in terms of difficulty, so there will be something here for players of all ability levels. Some of the easier pieces (e.g., Limbo and Exit) could probably be played by somebody with as little as a few months or a year of piano experience. Some of them are technically very challenging and beyond my current levels (I would call myself an intermediate player).

I would say that roughly half of everything I play is by Einaudi. I will never tire of it.

David Lanz - Sacred Road (Piano Solo Personality) [Paperback] Review

David Lanz - Sacred Road [Paperback]I have been playing music from this book for almost two years and I still enjoy most of the pieces. There is a nice mix of fast and slow pieces. I think David's music is very open to personal interpretation, which makes for a different experience depending upon what I bring to the piano at the time.Person favorites include Nocturne, Before the Last Leaf Falls, The Long Goodbye, Variations on a Theme from Pachelbel's Canon, and Knights in White Satin.David's music is complex enough to interest the experienced player but not so difficult to frustrate you. Some of the passages do take time to master but it is well worth the effort.

A DAY TO REMEMBER: Piano Music for your Wedding Day [Paperback] Review

A DAY TO REMEMBER: Piano Music for your Wedding Day [Paperback]This is a good resource for solo pianists who play a lot of weddings.I bought it after getting multiple requests for music "like the O'Neill Brothers."The problem is, half the songs that you will be asked for are in the 2nd volume, so you'll have to buy two books (this seems to be a way to get more money per song, rather than publishing them all in a single volume). That being said, a single wedding should cover the cost of the both books.A few of the songs* have an optional instrumental part to complete the arrangement.

A Day To Remember includes:
Falling in Love
Wachet Auf (Sleepers, Awake)
Air on the G String
Air (from _Water Music_)
Reminiscent Joy
Canon in D*
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring*
The Wedding Song (There Is Love)
Ave Maria*
I Will Be Here
The Gift of Love*
Spring (from _The Four Seasons_)
Ode to Joy
From This Moment On
The Way You Look Tonight
Forever in Love

The arrangements are intermediate to advanced.Comparing the transcriptions with other Hal Leonard editions that I have, I find that the Airs are the same as in other HL books. The transcriptions of JesuJoy of Man's Desiring and Ave Maria are slightly arranged for the 2nd instrument, and Canon in D is heavily arranged.I have never seen a piano transcription of Spring before. It is the most difficult piece in the book, and the least pianistic, but it still makes for a great recessional with a little bit of practice and metronome work. For a piece that could be potentially difficult to reduce to piano, the transcription is fairly accurate and satisfying.

My biggest complaint is that with only three days of gentle use, the spine is already cracking.I fear the book will not last through its first ceremony, and I may have to photocopy the pages and put them into a notebook for practical use.
