Keyboard Chords Deluxe: Full-Color Photos and Diagrams for Over 900 Chords (keyboard instruction) [Paperback] Review

Keyboard Chords Deluxe: Full-Color Photos and Diagrams for Over 900 Chords [Paperback]This is the best keyboard chord chart book that I have found in a long time!It goes through an explination of chord types and their symbols before showing the chords themselves. It includes pictures of how the chords look on the staff, a drawing of a keyboard with the notes shaded in that are included in the chord, and even an actual picture of how a right have would look playing the chord! They are arranged in an easy-to-find way and includes both the notation for treble and bass clef. This is a wonderful book for ANY keyboard player looking to expand their knowledge on chords, or to just confirm any questionable chords.I highly recommend this book.

The Definitive Jazz Collection (Definitive Collections) [Paperback] Review

The Definitive Jazz Collection [Paperback]No "fake book", or "real book" this. You get full, well-thought-out harmonizations. This isn't how Jazz pianists acquire their numbers, but hey, this graduate of the weekly visit to the traditional read-the-music-and-play-it-exactly-as-written piano teacher likes it just fine this way.Having played through about 25% of the songs, I'll say there are no really bad arrangements, and quite a few very good ones. The technical difficulty is toward the higher end of the non-classical stuff you find in the music stores -- the average song is about as hard (if you want to play all the notes) as a Chopin Waltz or a Clementi Sonatina.

Beatles Favorites (Five Finger Piano Songbook) [Paperback] Review

Beatles Favorites [Paperback]I would elaborate on the previous reviewer's remarks by clarifying that the purpose of this book - and its wonderful companion volume 'The Beatles' Hits'- is not to cover every note of the songs that it contains.Rather, the purpose of the books is to help guitarists to learn the 'fiddly bits' in The Beatles' songs - lead breaks, tricky guitar figures, riffs, and interplay between several guitars.
Being both a Beatles' obsessive, and a guitar player interested in pinpoint accuracy, I have sought out tabs from many sources, online and in bookstores.I have never found anything as accurate as Wolf Marshall's transcriptions. And some of the other books are plain wrong. However, I find it somewhat curious that - having gone to the lengths that he did, of acquiring the same intruments used by the Fab Four in order to make the sound of the accompanying CD Rom's more accurate - Marshall doesn't actually seem capable of copying the style of playing 100% accurately, although he seems to be trying to do so. I find it reassuring that a session musician couldn't cop the feel that The Beatles put into their playing.
The idea of providing music, tablature, and CD versions of the songs is a great one, because it covers all modes of learning. And the way that the CD's are recorded is inspired: Marshall provides versions of portions of the tracks at regular and slow speeds, and within each of these contexts records the instruments on different tracks which can be isolated or combined using the balance control. In practice, this means that one can turn the balance in order to provide backing (drums and bass), eliminating the guitar part(s), thereby allowing one to play along with the backing tracks; conversely, one could eliminate the backing, and just play along with the guitar parts - a brilliant idea.
Marshall also provides fine written and verbal commentaries about each track, and about The Beatles' musical and cultural importance - a very welcome bonus.
I can't wait to get Marshall's 'The Best of the Beatles for Acoustic Guitar'.
Congratulations, Wolf. It's nice to find someone who cares enough to do such a thorough job.
Geert

Romance: boleros favoritos [Paperback] Review

Romance: boleros favoritos [Paperback]A bit about myself.I'm a guitarist and am learning spanish.I have found it useful to learn songs with spanish words to enhance my language skills.
Over the years, I have purchased a number of songbooks containing songs with words in spanish, but found this one to be the most useful, because the songs are more contemporary. Many of the songs in this book are available on CD's by various latin performers.
If you speak any spanish, you will find fascination in the translations. For instance the words to Perfidia simply do not match at all with the English translation.Have some fun with this, and see what you would have used instead.
The musical scores are excellent, with very nice guitar chords.
My personal favorite is Reloj, the very romantic interpretation of time with a lover, or time away from a lover. But there are many other romance standards in this collection that will enhance your repertoire.
Picture yourself with your guitar standing beneath your lover's window, singing songs from this collection.Ah, the language of love, with the songs, is sure to be a hit.
Kevin McCusker

The Ultimate Christmas Fake Book: for Piano, Vocal, Guitar, Electronic Keyboard and All C Instruments (Fake Books) [Plastic Comb] Review

The Ultimate Christmas Fake Book: for Piano, Vocal, Guitar, Electronic Keyboard and All C Instruments [Plastic Comb]First, there seems to be a discrepancy with the picture of the songbook's cover shown above.

I have posted a customer image of the songbook's actual cover (which is beautiful in and of itself).

Obviously, the incorrect image above is from an earlier 3rd edition. Notice the old cover says over 200 songs... well, this updated edition now has 275 songs.

Also, this book now has 231 pages as opposed to the 160 pages mentioned above under "Product Details".

Edit 12/07/08: Ok... I hadn't checked in a very long time, but obviously Amazon has removed the incorrect image that I just made mention of... so you can ignore that part of this review.

I love this book!

I am an amateur pianist and enjoy playing from this fakebook very much.

This is a great selection of Yuletide favorites represented in melody lines, lyrics and chords.

Seemingly, most of the titles you'd look for are in this collection as well as a lot of lesser-known ones.

I have listed the complete contents below.

Please take care to make sure enough of 'your' favorite Christmas tunes are listed there so that you don't regret buying the book.

I heartily and heartfully recommend this Christmas songbook to you!

Encyclopedia of Chords for Guitar & Piano [Plastic Comb] Review

Encyclopedia of Chords for Guitar & Piano [Plastic Comb]If you have even cursory experience with piano and guitar, and are trying to improve your skills in one of them, you absolutely need this book.I've played piano in the past (including significant time in grade school) and have recently been trying to pick up the guitar.I know many chords on the piano but have no idea how to play them on the guitar. This book is a visual guide to this transition: look up your piano chords, see your hand position on the keys, then the corresponding position on the guitar neck, fully annotated and complete with alternate positions. The book also includes progressions, movable chords, and alternate chord names in the back.

I'm extremely pleased with this book, and have already recommended it to friends who know both instruments. If you're one of these people, treat yourself to a great reference.

Modern Jazz Piano: A Study In Harmony And Improvisation (Music Sales America) [Paperback] Review

Modern Jazz Piano: A Study In Harmony And Improvisation [Paperback]This book completely changed my understanding and level of jazz piano playing. It is short and to the point, yet carefully written and complete.I like the fact that the author is a trained engineer. As a computerprogrammer I can identify with the way the book is layed out very logicallywith the assumption that the reader is intelligent, interested, andmotivated.I read the entire book while on trains going to and from work. I think it would have been a distraction to have read it while at a piano. The chord pattern excercises at the end of the book are excellent; I ammethododically going through all of them using a PC based sequencerconnected via midi to an electronic keyboard. If you only buy one bookon jazz piano, I think it should be this one. The next book to readafter this one, in my opinion is "All about Chords".I am almostfinished reading it;I could never have handled it if I hadn't read"Modern Jazz Piano" first. The two books together aremagnificently complete. I have a quite a library of jazz piano and jazzbooks; most of them are padded and not of much use."Modern JazzPiano" is by contrast a classic that every jazz pianist should have.I lost many years because I was brain-washed into believing the JohnMehegan jazz system as taught at Julliard was the only way to learn jazz. Inow believe the Julliard system is hopelessly complicated and noteffective. The traditional harmony systems used in "Modern JazzPiano" are the best and also the most popular. It is not somethingesoteric that only propeller heads know about. Buy it and hold onto it. Even if it sits on your bookshelf for years, there will come a day when itwill speak eloquently to you and change your level of playing andunderstanding.

How to Play Popular Piano in 10 Easy Lessons: The Fastest, Easiest Way to Learn to Play from Sheet Music or by Ear [Paperback] Review

How to Play Popular Piano in 10 Easy Lessons: The Fastest, Easiest Way to Learn to Play from Sheet Music or by Ear [Paperback]For the beginner, this book is excellent. I have looked at many piano books when I first began playing, and most of them were usually too complicated, or too simplistic. This book, however, was one that fell right in the middle and helped me understand all kinds of important ideas in music, such as harmony and melody, building chords and scales (and understanding HOW), reading music, how to understand progressions, and how to play by ear and improvise. It is certainly geared toward getting you "up and playing" in the simplest, fastest way, at a moderate pace, with a good depth of information that does not get overwhelming. Because of this, this book is probably suited much more for the person who has no music experience and wants to learn the basics of how to play out of fake books and begin improvising. It is probably not good for those who want in-depth and more advanced theory of music, but it is an excellent book to use as a stepping stone toward more adva! nced piano study. This is a must have book for any beginnger.
