This is a great book to practice cello and have fun with these movie melodies, the CD is a helpful device, there are some pieces a little bit difficult for me that I'm a begginer but not too much, I'm very pleased with this book and CD.

I ordered it hoping the book would contain guitar tab, but it is plain old sheet music. I'm sure it is a perfectly good book, but all I can do is read tab so it is useless to me.

Beatles Favorites (Five Finger Piano Songbook) [Paperback] Review

I would elaborate on the previous reviewer's remarks by clarifying that the purpose of this book - and its wonderful companion volume 'The Beatles' Hits'- is not to cover every note of the songs that it contains.Rather, the purpose of the books is to help guitarists to learn the 'fiddly bits' in The Beatles' songs - lead breaks, tricky guitar figures, riffs, and interplay between several guitars.
Being both a Beatles' obsessive, and a guitar player interested in pinpoint accuracy, I have sought out tabs from many sources, online and in bookstores.I have never found anything as accurate as Wolf Marshall's transcriptions. And some of the other books are plain wrong.However, I find it somewhat curious that - having gone to the lengths that he did, of acquiring the same intruments used by the Fab Four in order to make the sound of the accompanying CD Rom's more accurate - Marshall doesn't actually seem capable of copying the style of playing 100% accurately, although he seems to be trying to do so. I find it reassuring that a session musician couldn't cop the feel that The Beatles put into their playing.
The idea of providing music, tablature, and CD versions of the songs is a great one, because it covers all modes of learning. And the way that the CD's are recorded is inspired: Marshall provides versions of portions of the tracks at regular and slow speeds, and within each of these contexts records the instruments on different tracks which can be isolated or combined using the balance control. In practice, this means that one can turn the balance in order to provide backing (drums and bass), eliminating the guitar part(s), thereby allowing one to play along with the backing tracks; conversely, one could eliminate the backing, and just play along with the guitar parts - a brilliant idea.
Marshall also provides fine written and verbal commentaries about each track, and about The Beatles' musical and cultural importance - a very welcome bonus.
I can't wait to get Marshall's 'The Best of the Beatles for Acoustic Guitar'.
Congratulations, Wolf. It's nice to find someone who cares enough to do such a thorough job.

Billy Joel Hits Piano Play-Along Vol.62 Bk/Cd (Hal Leonard Piano Play-Along) [Paperback] Review

I am a pianist and I like to play along with midi files, karaoke files and other backing tracks. This item was a dream for me because I am a Billy Joel Superfan and thought, "oh boy, I have found professionally done backing tracks to play along with that will be on a par with the cd's, minus piano and vocals of course."
Yes it is technically true but the backing tracks are woefully lacking in many ways and I would venture to say that professional midi files are a better bet when played through a decent synth. The most irritating thing of all is that there is a digital piano playing along throughout so you end up playing in unison with a digital piano in the piano only spots. Take Baby Grand for example, it has a wonderful piano only intro but instead of just a click track, you play along with a digital piano. Also, most irritating, at the end of baby grand, the digital piano starts noodling around on a blues scale like crazy. The point to these was supposed to be that the user became the piano player.. I do not like that concept. Same with Goodnight my Angel and the rest. The backing track does sound pretty nice in parts but it has that annoying digital piano track throughout that you basically end up shadowing... Not so sure I would have purchased knowing how they are now but I am not regretful either. edit: The New York State of Mind backing track is just atrocious, the intro is not included in the book or backing track although I suppose you could press play when you finished the intro or re record with metronome etc.

Pump out that Piano Man solo! That's why these books are good. There's no section too difficult, there's nothing held back. No stupid interpretations of melody lines - this is the real deal. In terms of sheer enjoyment, nothing beats playing transcriptions of songs, especially ones you like. So to sit down and play 'Piano Man' from start to finish exactly like Billy Joel (solo included), or 'New York State of Mind' with the jazzy intro and the beautifully voiced chords - it's a real treat.
