Supertramp - Greatest Hits (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

Supertramp - Greatest Hits [Paperback]This band is seriously underrated and often overlooked. I can't think of a better candidate for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or for a VH1 Behind the Music (we've seen the Journey story like a thousand times already). Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies are outstanding song writers. These transcriptions are basic and may not be completely accurate in certain cases but this book is still great and these songs are so much fun to play- especially if you happen to have a Wurli or a keyboard with a good Wurli sound...and of course a 12 string guitar. It pretty much focuses on the band during their classic lineup (the only lineup that matters)- Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, Dougie Thompson, John Helliwell and Bob Seibenberg. The only exception is the song Cannonball. Other than the song "I'm Beggin' You" I don't think any fans will miss any of the less inspirational material released since Roger left. Maybe one day the stars will again align just so and the original band will come together again- at least to accept a long overdue entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... but until then these songs are a tremendous inspiration for musicians around the world and I highly reccomend this book.

Progressive Rock Keyboard: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback] Review

Progressive Rock Keyboard: Hal Leonard Keyboard Style Series [Paperback]I don't why anyone has'nt written a review for this book yet. Its perfect, and the accompanying CD is so helpful to help learn the rhythms of progressive rock keyboard. I would greatly recommend this book if you are sick of playing yankee doodle or any other book with boring sheet music. Contained in the book is an adequate description of the genre and presents perfect examples that you can learn. I found this book very satisfying and not too hard. I also have the rock keyboard and find that one great as well. So do buy these books.

The Best of Queen (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

The Best of Queen [Paperback]Brian May is one of the finest rock guitarists of all times - I do not think most rockers in the USA fully appreciate his creativity and talent. Now, guitarrists everywhere and of all generations have a fine chance to immerse into the rich music of Queen. this book rocks!
This is a fine songbook with great information about May's style and the career evolution of Queen. I thank the author and the publisher for such a good, thoughtful work. Even the cover is very classy ;-)
This book covers many facets of May's style, from the heavy riffs of "Keep yourself alive" "Hammer to Fall" and "Stone Cold crazy" to the epic solo of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and his work in hits such as "We are the champions", "Killer Queen", "Bycicle race", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "A Kind of Magic". All the music is superb and covers every style in rock, from metal to rockabilly to funk ("Another one bites the dust"). the CD contains all the riffs and solos played in "real" speed and in sequence also VERY SLOW so the beginners can pick up. The author also comments on how to get the distinctive "Brian May sound". I still think it sounds more real when you play the guitar model that bears his name!
It won't be easy to play it all note-by-note and at track speed (after all, it is Brian May stuff) but this is a fun book and you can learn technique and soloing and songwriting in the process of working through the tracks. And it is fun! Hey, it is the "Bohemian Rhapsody" solo, folks!
A commendable work that truly respects and promotes the legacy of a great and influential musician.
